Thompson Machinery is rapidly expanding its footprint across Middle Tennessee. In 2020, leadership recognized they needed a facility that balanced heavy-duty operations with a high-end customer experience to support that growth. They tapped Crain Construction to partner with them on a new CAT Machinery facility designed to serve equipment sales, rentals, and service needs in a growing market.
The 10,000-square-foot facility features a two-story office, a large training room, and six dedicated service bays. The site also includes specialized areas for hose fabrication and parts storage, along with accessory structures for equipment washing and battery charging. While the building’s footprint is highly functional, the path to delivery required a hands-on, solutions-focused approach to keep the project on track.
Ownership & Due Diligence During the Design Phase
Every project brings unique challenges. On this project, that meant working through design details early on to ensure the full team was aligned before construction ramped up.
Crain worked alongside the owner, design team, and trade partners to help refine details and maintain momentum. That level of collaboration is a big part of our approach. We stay engaged, ask the right questions, and help move decisions forward so the project keeps progressing with confidence.
Experience That Matters with Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings
This facility also relied on a pre-engineered metal building system, which brought its own level of complexity. While these structures are efficient and cost-effective, they require tight coordination between the design team, manufacturer, and field crews.
In this case, that coordination took time and careful attention. Many of the necessary construction details had to be developed collaboratively during the process. Crain’s team worked alongside the manufacturer and trade partners to ensure everything was aligned, from structural components to exterior finishes.
The project also included enhanced exterior materials at the request of the local municipality. These upgrades helped elevate the look of the building while maintaining the efficiency of a metal building system. Balancing those goals required thoughtful planning and strong communication across the entire team.
A Practical Project with Lasting Value
At its core, this project reflects a common truth in industrial construction. A building may look simple, but delivering it successfully takes experience, coordination, and a willingness to step in when needed.
One of the biggest takeaways from this project is the importance of assembling the right team early. Pre-engineered metal buildings demand a clear understanding of how design, fabrication, and construction come together. When that alignment is in place, projects run more smoothly and outcomes improve.
For Crain, this project adds to our growing experience with pre-engineered systems and reinforces a core tenet: when challenges come up, the right team does not step back. They step in, work together, and keep the project moving forward.
If you are planning an industrial facility in Middle Tennessee, Crain Construction is ready to help you think through the details and build with confidence.
