Gary New, Crain Construction’s Preconstruction Manager, has built an impressive career in the construction industry, marked by his dedication, expertise, and people-first approach. Since joining Crain 15 years ago, Gary has applied his extensive experience across various roles and industries, helping Crain continue to exceed client expectations. His current work includes overseeing preconstruction for the latest Turnip Truck location on Vanderbilt University’s campus—a project that has seen him navigate unique challenges and leverage his longstanding relationship with the client.
Shaping a Vision for Turnip Truck at Vanderbilt
Gary’s experience with Turnip Truck extends back to the Charlotte Avenue store, an award-winning project that he helped bring to life a few years ago. The new Midtown location is set to be the grocer’s largest, with 26,000 square feet of space in the bottom level of an 11-story building known as The Broadview at Vanderbilt, which serves as graduate student housing. Gary appreciates Turnip Truck’s commitment to fresh, local foods and sees this project as an opportunity to support a vibrant community gathering spot. As walls are framed and tile is installed, Gary keeps the timeline on track, ensuring a smooth process toward the store’s anticipated opening by the end of 2024.
A Lifetime of Construction Experience
Born just outside Indianapolis, Indiana, Gary developed an early interest in construction, working in various hands-on roles throughout high school and college. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in construction management. Initially, Gary went to Purdue with the intention of “becoming the next Jacques Cousteau.” After the first few years and many biology courses, Gary realized that, more than anything, he just wanted a career where he could spend most of his time outdoors. Construction proved to be the right fit, leading him through roles as a project engineer and project manager across Ohio, Florida, Colorado, and finally Nashville.
Gary’s diverse background spans everything from wastewater treatment facilities to complex projects like building out the world’s largest climatic air test chamber at Eglin Air Force Base. His extensive experience in estimating, project management, and preconstruction has given Gary the skills to anticipate challenges, plan meticulously, and ensure the success of every project he joins.
Building Meaningful Connections
A natural collaborator, Gary takes pride in the relationships he’s built with clients and team members. His leadership style is rooted in setting a positive example and fostering open communication. He values Crain’s family-like work environment, shaped by Michael and Mark Rankin, whose commitment to integrity and excellence reflects that of their father, Lewis Rankin.
“I had the pleasure of knowing their father, Lewis and working alongside him a few years before he retired. You can see the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Michael and Mark are just like him in so many ways. You’re hard-pressed to go anywhere in Nashville and mention Lewis Rankin without hearing glowing things about him. He was, and still is, known as a good man who left a great legacy.”
Gary values the Rankins’ dedication to creating a workplace that feels more like a community.

Beyond the Office
Outside of work, Gary spends time with his wife, four grown children, and 12 grandkids at their farm in Watertown, Tennessee. Although he’s tried his hand at farming with goats, chickens, geese, and ducks, the farm has become a family gathering place where everyone can connect and experience the outdoors together.
