NASHVILLE, Tenn.Crain Construction Inc. is experienced with urban construction projects that call for noise mitigation, creative lane closures and tailoring worksite schedules to be respectful of area residents and workers.

But installing thousands of pieces of lap siding to create a custom mural the size of a football field was a new challenge.

The Chelsea is a 79-unit, four-story urban apartment building of wood frame structure on top of a two-story post-tension parking garage with podium.

Located at the corner of 12th Avenue South and Acklen Avenue near Belmont University, The Chelsea site is bordered by a public alley and busy streets including a major thoroughfare. Only 35 feet separate the face of the building and the roadway.

“We had to be creative in our lay down,” said James Williams, Crain Construction project manager. “So we got the garage up and used it for materials storage and employed a lot of just-in-time delivery. We also did special noise mitigation for a neighbor who was particularly sensitive to construction noise.”

But according to Williams, the biggest challenge was installing a custom mural on the building exterior.

Developer Mainland Companies commissioned Nashville artist Bryce McCloud to design an urban mural using the east wall of the building as his canvas. The mural is the size of a football field and is comprised of 3,092 pieces of Hardie lap siding in blue, green, tan and white.

“With four colors and 36 different types of pieces, we were installing siding by numbers with a number assigned for each color and size,” said Williams. “It was definitely a first for us.”

Installation took three weeks. The result is public art reflecting the evolution and artistic nature of the neighborhood.

For the other 75 percent of the building face, Crain Construction installed 28,000 square feet of Hardie Rainscreen system to create a gray and white paneled appearance.

The Chelsea has 1,800 square feet of retail space and 18 different unit configurations including five studio units, five one-bedroom units and eight two-bedroom units. Amenities include a rooftop sundeck, penthouse clubroom with gourmet kitchen, recording/rehearsal studio, dog wash, bike storage room with repair station and a fitness center.
